Dear Lord Day,

There are so many possible routes that lie before us.  Sometimes it’s hard to discern which way we should go.  But your word is a guide which helps us find our way.  We thank you for the gift of your scriptures and for the Holy Spirit which helps to lead us, verse by verse, chapter by chapter, life decision by life decision.  Amen.

Scripture

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”  Psalm 119:105

 Dear Lord,

We pray that as we approach our time with The Story, that we will hunger and thirst for spiritual growth and transformation — both individually and as a congregation.  Amen.

Scripture

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”  — Matthew 5:6

Dear Lord,

Support everyone on the BRPC team who is working to bring The Story to our church.  To the CE, Worship and Property committees, to all those who have stepped forward to teach, to all those who are signing up for resources and beginning to study the opening chapters.  There is a place for everyone as we prepare to embark on this journey.  Help everyone to feel welcome, needed, appreciated, treasured as we get ready to jump together!   Amen

 Scripture

The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ.

— Ephesians 4:11-13

Dear Lord,

Monday morning.  The beginning of a work or school week for many.  We continue in prayer as we anticipate another beginning on September 7th – that of our 31-week study in The Story.  Just as we prepare for our work week or days at school, so we prepare for this time of studying your word together.  Chapter 1 awaits us – “Creation – The Beginning of Life as we Know It.”  We approach this beginning with hope, anticipation, curiosity, and perhaps some questions (questions are great!).  Guide us as we prepare to set out on this journey.  Amen

Scripture

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.  Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.  And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.    — Gen 1:1-5

Dear Lord,

On this Lord’s day,

“Breathe on me breath of God,

Fill me with life anew,

That I may love what thou dost love,

And do what Thou wouldst do.”

Amen

Scripture

Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it:  I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.   —  Isaiah 42:5-7

Dear Lord,

As I come in from the heat of working in the yard, I think of how you provide for us in all ways.  The summer sun to grow your creation.   A tree for shade.   A drink of water to refresh.   Your holy word is all those things too – nurturing, growing, refreshing, renewing.  As we tend the garden, help us also tend those pages.   Amen

Scripture

The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand.  The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.  The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.  The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.  — Psalm 121:5-8

Dear Lord,

As we go through these recent weeks, the headlines have been sobering.  From the unrest in Ferguson, to gruesome killings in Iraq, to the ongoing violence in Syria, Israel/Palestine and Ukraine, and then the sweep of the ebola epidemic in West Africa.   Tell us this is not your story.  Tell us that all this violence and suffering is not the final word.  Tell us that your grace and love will master all.

Ah, but you have told us.

Amen

Scripture

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.  All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.   The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.    — John 1:1-5

Dear Lord,

We pray that you will help us welcome others to share in the study of your word through The Story at BRPC.  Help us make that invitation, to extend a hand, and to be a place of warm hospitality as we grow closer to you and one another.  Amen.

Scripture

May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus,so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.   — Romans 15:5-7

 Dear Lord,

We pray that you will pour out your blessings on all those who will lead our Sunday School classes starting this September, and to everyone who comes to learn your story.  Amen.

 Scripture

“And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.”   — Matthew 10: 42

Prayerimages (4)

 Dear Lord,

There are times we get busy and suddenly realize that we’ve overlooked something — like (whoops!) posting these daily prayers!  Fortunately, we also realize that ultimately all things are in your hands, and you neither slumber nor sleep.   We live by your grace, and by the graces of those around us.  Amen.

Scripture

I lift up my eyes to the hills– from where will my help come?

My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.

He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand.

The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.

The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.

— Psalm 121
