Dear God,

We are grateful for all the different people who, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, are helping to bring the experience of The Story to BRPC – the Christian Education and Worship Committees, the volunteers who will teach, the church staff, the custodial staff who will keep our meeting spaces clean, the church members and visitors who will come to participate in the classes and worship services.   Use us all, we pray, to your glory.    Amen

If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?  But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose.  If all were a single member, where would the body be?  As it is, there are many members, yet one body.

1 Corinthians 12:17-20

Dear God,

We give thanks for other congregations that have undertaken The Story and have provided resources and encouragement for other churches that follow in their steps.  Amen

Scripture

As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.  There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.     — Galatians 3:27-28

Dear God,

We pray that visitors, as well as our members, will be drawn into The Story.  And we pray that for those who may be new among us that  BRPC will be a place of great hospitality and warmth as we encounter The Story together.     Amen.

Scripture

Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.  Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.  Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.    — Romans 12:13-18

Dear God,

As our congregation prepares for this special time of study, we pray that you will bless our children as they come to know your story and your love for them.   Amen

Scripture:

“Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’”    — Matthew 19:14

Prayer    20140715_203843

Dear God,

Gather us in as we come this morning to read about your Story of uncommon peace, expansive love and abundant grace.     Amen.

Scripture

O come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!   Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!  For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.   In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also.  The sea is his, for he made it, and the dry land, which his hands have formed.   O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!  For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. O that today you would listen to his voice!    — Psalm 95:1-7

Dear God,

Guide us, we pray, as we prepare for the beginning of “The Story” at BRPC.   Give energy, vision and listening ears to those who plan.   Stir those who may help in some way to step into those roles.  Tickle the curiosity and whet the appetite for those who are wondering about participating.  Embolden us all to share a personal word of invitation to someone who needs God in their life.   Amen.

Scripture

The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.   – 2 Corinthians 9:6

PrayerP1050544

Dear God,

Help us find the quiet center in our busy days to allow us to pause and enter into the reading of your word.  And in those moments, let your Holy Scripture reveal to us more about your story, and where we belong within it.    Amen.

Scripture

For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.   Psalm 62:1

Prayer

Dear God,  What if I’m not a morning person?  Help me (or other family members) to get moving in the morning so I can share in Sunday School at 9:30 – and be refreshed!  Amen.

Scripture    images (26)

So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you shall know that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt,  and in the morning you shall see the glory of the LORD . . .    In the evening quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp.   When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground. When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat.”     — Exodus 16:6-7, 13-15

CrownPrayer:

Dear God,  Help us to be open to something new.   Help us to sense your stirring in our midst.   Amen

Scripture:

“I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”  – Isaiah 43:19

On September 7th, Blue Ridge Presbyterian will embark on Crown_Logo_Horizontala 31-week journey of transformation with “The Story.”   Beginning that Sunday, all of our Sunday School classes (9:30 a.m.) and our worship service (10:45 a.m.) will be anchored around God’s story as told across 31 chronological chapters.   As we prepare for this faith experience, I invite you to join me in a 40-day period of prayer.   So gather with me here each day to share a brief prayer and scripture verse as we anticipate this time together.   As always, I’ll welcome your thoughts and comments in the space below!

Prayer:

Dear God, Please prepare our hearts and minds to receive the beauty, the majesty, the challenge and the hope of your story.  Amen.

Scripture:

Remember your word to your servant, in which you have made me hope.  This is my comfort in my distress, that your promise gives me life.”   – Psalm 119:49-50
